Analytics for every subscriber.

Requests per episode and per subscriber, listening app, country and trend over time, collected without keeping IP addresses. Below you will also find, for each measure, what it does not prove: that is the part that keeps you from making a wrong decision on a right number.

What we measure

The metrics that actually matter

Everything you need to read how your private podcast is doing, without invasive profiling of your listeners.

Downloads

How many times episodes are downloaded, requested from each subscriber’s personal address.

Unique listeners

How many different subscriptions asked for at least one file in the period. One person with a phone and a tablet is one subscription asking from two places.

Listening apps

Which apps your subscribers listen with: Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, Overcast, Castbox and, on public feeds, Spotify too.

Geography

Which areas your listens come from, derived on the fly from the IP address without ever keeping it.

Trends over time

How downloads and listeners move day by day, so you can spot what works at a glance.

Per episode

Compare episodes against each other: which ones get downloaded most and which least.

The dictionary of measures

What each number counts, and what it does not prove

Podcast analytics are not video analytics: there is no open page for us to watch, there is an app asking for a file. Below, for each measure, what it actually counts and what you cannot conclude from it. The third column is the one we care about most.

Episode requests

What it counts

How many times the file was asked for, one row per request coming through the personal address.

What it does NOT prove

That anyone listened, let alone all the way through. Many apps download new episodes on their own.

Unique listeners

What it counts

How many different subscriptions asked for at least one file in the period.

What it does NOT prove

How many people there are. One person with a phone and a tablet is one subscription asking from two places.

Country

What it counts

The country derived from the IP address at the moment of the request, after which the IP is discarded.

What it does NOT prove

Where your listeners live. It says where that request came from, which with a VPN or on a trip is another matter.

Listening app

What it counts

Which program asked for the file, read from how it introduces itself.

What it does NOT prove

That it is the one the person normally uses. An app can request on behalf of another.

Subscriber score

What it counts

The sum of that person’s requests over the last thirty days.

What it does NOT prove

How much they listened. It is an activity signal, good for ordering a list, not for certifying a path.

How a score comes out, concretely

Module 1, requested three times (phone, tablet, phone again)
3
Module 2, requested once
1
Module 3, requested twice
2

Score: 6

Six requests. Not six episodes finished, not six full listens, not six people. Read for what it is, it tells you who is worth calling: that is already plenty, and there is no need to pretend it says more.

Country

The country yes, the IP address no

Fonaria derives the country from the IP address at the moment of download and does not keep the address.

  • The country is computed on the spot, the IP address is not stored
  • No third-party cookies on listeners
  • Data hosted in Europe

Trends

See what works, day by day

The metrics are consolidated into clear trends: downloads and listeners over time, broken down by episode, app and area. So you understand which content pulls and where to act, without exporting spreadsheets.

  • Downloads and unique listeners over the period you pick
  • Episode-by-episode comparison to see what pulls
  • Breakdown by listening app and by geographic area
  • Readable charts inside the dashboard, no manual exports

Why it matters

Decide on data, not on gut feeling

Analytics help you improve your content and understand who your listeners are: while staying on the right side of privacy.

Understand your audience

See how many subscriptions download, with which apps and from which country.

Improve your episodes

See which episodes get downloaded most and which least, to pace gradual release and new episodes.

Respect privacy

No IP addresses kept and no third-party cookies; data stays in Europe.

FAQ

Questions about analytics

Do you store listeners’ IP addresses?
No. The IP address is only used at the moment of download to derive the geographic area, then it isn’t kept.
What’s the difference between downloads and unique listeners?
Requests count every time an episode is fetched; unique listeners count how many different subscriptions asked for at least one. Neither is a number of people, and together they say more than either alone.
Can I see which apps my subscribers listen with?
Yes. We detect the main podcast apps (Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, Overcast, Castbox and others) so you know where your audience lives. Spotify shows up on public feeds only, because private feeds do not go there.
Are the analytics per episode or overall?
Both. You see the overall trend of the podcast and can drill down to the single episode to compare them.
Where is the analytics data hosted?
In Europe, on servers in Germany. The Security page lists every provider.
